SWINE ROADSHOW IN DONG NAI, VIETNAM

On July 18, 2024, in Thien Phuong Hall, Dong Nai, Vietnam, Swine Roadshow will be organized with the topic of Enhance swine performance through improved farm management and nutrient utilization.

Dong Nai: Steering livestock production towards sustainability

Dong Nai is renowned as Vietnam’s swine production capital. It ranks at the top for livestock production in the country, with cattle herds totaling 2.1 million and poultry herds totaling 25.7 million. Livestock production contributes more than 61.83% of the province’s agricultural value.

The two main livestock groups of the province are swine and chickens. Of which, the total herd of swine is about 2 million, with farm livestock accounting for more than 90% of the total herd.

The swine population in Dong Nai is showing a declining trend. In April 2024, there was a 1.27% decrease in the number of swine compared to the same period in 2023. This decline can be attributed to factors such as rising food prices, smuggling of swine, and the relocation of facilities from areas where animal husbandry is prohibited.

Regardless, Dong Nai is taking action to adapt and promote the long-term and sustainable development of the province’s livestock industry.

Dong Nai encourages the formation of livestock chains. Dong Nai has built 52 livestock chains, with 29 of them being swine chains.

The province has 150 farms and 7 livestock cooperative groups that meet VietGAHP, providing 110,000 tons of standard pork annually.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Deputy Director of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department, assessed that the province has achieved a high level of mechanization. 30% of swine farms have built automatic or semi-automatic technology systems. In some small farming areas, machines have completely replaced manual farming.

Dong Nai is also promoting organic and circular swine farming. The province aims to reach a herd of 1,700 organic swine by 2025, and 10,200 organic swine by 2030.

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Dat – Vice President of the Animal Husbandry Association in Vietnam (AHAV) will give an insightful overview of Vietnam’s swine production with opportunities and challenges.

Attendees will learn about the “Pig breed and Development program in Dong Nai & Southeast provinces” delivered by the Director of Southern Institute of Animal Husbandry – Vietnam Institute of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Nguyen Huu Tinh.

Following, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Hai from Nong Lam University in HCMC will bring to the roadshow the presentation of “Sustainable livestock production: Challenges and Solutions”.

Then, Vice Chairman of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Faculty, Nong Lam University in HCMC – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thieu will present practical solutions on nutrition to improve the performance of swine farming.

Last but not least, practical experiences about “Piglet feed from Thailand: Test Result at Farm in Vietnam” will be shared by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang from United Feedmill Vietnam Co. Ltd.
