VIETNAM POULTRY INDUSTRY: OVERCOME SHORT-TERM DIFFICULTIES, DEVELOP LONG-TERM STRATEGIES

  11/07/2023

The product selling price is now lower than the production cost which is now the main reason for a sharp decrease of poultry farm quantity in recent years. There is an urgent need to be raised for the poultry industry to find the solutions to help farmers overcome this difficult period.

SELLING BELOW COST OF PRODUCTION

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, the total herd of poultry and waterfowl tends to increase. However, in recent years, farmers have had to sell poultry products below the cost of production, leading to heavy losses for farmers.

Explaining the reason,  said: “The reason is that input materials, especially the price of feed ingredients have increased very high; conflicts between countries; effects of COVID-19; issues of protection of domestic production of some countries”.

Production of domestic livestock households is under competitive pressure from imported poultry products. In the last 5 years, the annual volume of imported chicken meat has increased continuously (over 15%), accounting for 20-25% of the total chicken meat consumed in the country.

This puts great pressure on the consumption of poultry products, making it difficult for businesses and farmers in Vietnam to sell poultry products.

It is necessary to ensure that farmers are profitable to have the conditions to reproduce

OVERCOME SHORT-TERM DIFFICULTIES

According to Mr. Tong Xuan Chinh – Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock Production, the immediate solution is to promote the role of the Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA), strengthen linkage and coordination within the poultry farming system. From sellers of breeds, animal feed, slaughter, processing to distribution, they must link together along the value chain to ensure that inputs are reduced by at least 10%.

This is the most important and feasible factor that can be done right now, it is necessary to ensure that farmers are profitable to have the conditions to reproduce.

LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT

To increase the competitiveness of businesses and poultry farmers in Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son – Chairman of the Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA) said: The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development needs to review the poultry development strategy in the medium and long term. The livestock industry authorities need to review and cut unnecessary administrative procedures, especially shorten the time to process paperwork, avoid losing opportunities in production and business for enterprises”.

Development orientation needs to harmonize between quantity and quality development. Emphasis is placed on improving quality and production efficiency rather than rapidly increasing quantity. At the same time, limit the increase in the number and size of farms in some areas and ecological zones with high livestock density.

To reduce production costs and reduce the price of animal feed, Mr. Bui Duc Huyen – Director of Viet Tin Nutrition Joint Stock Company said: “Restructuring raw material areas to serve livestock; Using livestock products that are beneficial to health; Limiting the commercial poultry meat import; Supporting chain links; Supporting on financial funding and interests”.

Vietnam’s livestock development strategy for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045 with the following orientations: By 2023, the total number of chickens will be maintained regularly from 500-550 million, of which about 60% are raised by industrial methods; Egg production is about 23 billion eggs, poultry meat accounts for 29-31% of total carcass production, etc.
